Nestled in Mammoth Lakes and just 2-2.5 hours away from the East (Tioga Pass) gate of the stunning Yosemite National Park, the Alpenhof Lodge offers the perfect base for exploring the park’s autumnal beauty. Enjoy the convenience of easy access to Yosemite’s iconic sights, while returning to a cozy mountain retreat for relaxation and comfort.
Getting There

As you embark on your journey to Yosemite National Park from the Alpenhof Lodge, you’ll pass through the scenic Mono Lake Basin. This unique inland sea, dating back at least 760,000 years, offers a fascinating detour. Renowned for its otherworldly beauty and unique ecosystem, Mono Lake is a must-see. Its highly alkaline waters, twice as salty as the ocean, support a thriving community of brine shrimp, alkali flies, and birds. The lake’s distinctive tufa formations, towers created by mineral-rich springs, are a testament to its geological history. Consider stopping at the South Tufa area. A one-mile self-guided nature trail takes you through a landscape of towering tufa formations, offering stunning views of the lake (Yosemite National Park Trips). Per the Mono Lake Committee, “South Tufa is a Federal Fee Area: adults are $3.00, children under 16 are free. National Parks Annual Passes are valid here.”
Next, stop in the small town of Lee Vining to fill up your gas tank before ascending Tioga Pass. As of September 19th, Tioga Pass is open, providing a convenient and scenic route to Yosemite National Park. From Alpenhof Lodge, expect a 45-minute to 1-hour drive through Tioga Pass to reach the park’s eastern entrance. Tioga Pass, the highest mountain pass in California, offers a breathtaking journey. As you ascend to 9,945 feet, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding alpine landscape (Avocados in the Alpine). Check HERE for current Yosemite road conditions, and HERE for Mono County road and weather updates.

This October, you need a reservation to enter Yosemite between 5am – 3pm on weekends and on October 14th. You can enter the park without a reservation on all other weekdays.
Fall Foliage and Photography Opportunities
Mid to late October is the prime time to witness Yosemite’s vibrant fall colors. As the temperatures cool down, the deciduous trees in Yosemite Valley begin their transformation, painting the landscape with a stunning array of hues. Mid-October weather often brings dramatic weather patterns, such as early morning fog and scattered clouds. These conditions can create even more striking and photogenic scenes. So, be sure to rise early to capture the magic of Yosemite’s fall mornings.
