Make the Most of August! Plan a Last-Minute Summer Getaway to Mammoth Lakes

If you’ve been waiting for a sign to squeeze in one more summer escape, this is it.

August is one of the best-kept secrets in Mammoth Lakes. The trails have fewer people, the lakes are sparkling, and the late-summer sunshine makes it easy to slow down and soak it all in. Whether you’ve got a few days or just a weekend, there’s still time to plan a last-minute summer getaway. Alpenhof Lodge is the perfect place to land.

Here’s why Mammoth in August is worth the trip:

The Weather is Just Right

While much of California is still in full-on summer heat, Mammoth Lakes stays refreshingly cool. Crisp mornings, warm afternoons, and chilly evenings make it easy to enjoy the outdoors all day long. You can hike, fish, paddle, or sit by the lake without the sweltering heat. It’s the kind of weather that makes doing nothing at all feel like a real luxury.

Yosemite is Within Reach

One of the best parts about staying in Mammoth Lakes is how close you are to the east entrance of Yosemite National Park. From Alpenhof Lodge, it’s an easy 30-minute drive to Tioga Pass, which puts you right at the doorstep of Tuolumne Meadows, Tenaya Lake, and other stunning high-country spots.

In August, Tioga Road is open, the wildflowers are still blooming, and the air is crisp and cool at elevation. It’s the kind of place where you can enjoy your morning coffee in Mammoth and still be on a high-alpine trail by mid-morning.

While Yosemite Valley sees peak visitation in August, the high-country areas accessed via Tioga Pass remain quieter, especially on weekdays. If you’ve visited the park before and only explored the Valley, this side of Yosemite offers a whole different experience—fewer crowds, cooler temps, and wide-open meadows under big Sierra skies.

A quick tip: From June 15 through August 15 and Labor Day Weekend, Yosemite requires a peak-hour reservation to enter the park between 5 a.m. and 4 p.m., unless you’re:

  • Staying in a park lodge or campground
  • Taking the YARTS public transit from Mammoth
  • Entering outside of peak hours

We recommend checking nps.gov/yose for the most up-to-date entry information. And like with any summer visit, be sure to check the air quality and wildfire updates before heading out.

Everything You Want in a Mountain Getaway

Whether you’re planning to kayak on Lake Mary, hike to Duck Pass, or check out local shops and dining in The Village, you’ll find it all just steps away. Prefer to keep things low-key? Kick back in the outdoor Jacuzzi, grab a drink at Clocktower Cellar, or find a sunny spot to simply enjoy the mountain views.
