Mammoth Lakes is taking meaningful steps to protect the natural environment that makes the Eastern Sierra such a special place to visit. In December 2023, the Town Council passed an ordinance to phase out single-use plastic water bottles within the Town of Mammoth Lakes. The goal is simple but impactful: reduce litter, cut down on waste, and encourage more sustainable habits for residents and visitors alike.
What the Plastic Water Bottle Ban Covers
The ordinance applies specifically to single-use plastic water bottles that are 500 milliliters or less in size. These are the smaller bottles most commonly sold individually or in cases. By targeting this category, the town aims to significantly reduce the volume of plastic waste generated each year.
Mammoth Lakes is among the first towns in California to take this step, reinforcing its commitment to environmental stewardship and long-term sustainability.
When the Ban Takes Effect
The plastic water bottle ban is being implemented in two phases.
Phase One began on January 1, 2025. This phase impacted town operations and permitted special events. The Town of Mammoth Lakes and any special event requiring a permit were no longer allowed to sell or distribute plastic water bottles that were 500 milliliters or less. This restriction also applied to vendors operating at these events. Many organizers adopted alternatives such as water bars or cup-free hydration stations to reduce plastic waste.
Phase Two began on January 1, 2026. This phase expanded the ban to all other distribution within the Town of Mammoth Lakes. Retail and wholesale businesses, restaurants, lodging properties, vending machines, complimentary distributors, and other providers were required to fully phase out non-compliant bottles. Any remaining inventory of single-use plastic water bottles 500 milliliters or less was required to be removed.
Single-use plastic water bottles will still be permitted in emergency situations.
What Is Still Allowed
Prepackaged water in plastic containers larger than 500 milliliters is still permitted under the ordinance. Bottles of 500 milliliters or less made from alternative materials such as aluminum or glass are also allowed. Refilling reusable containers remains the most effective way to support the intent of the ordinance and reduce overall waste.
