Mammoth in May is where winter and summer meet, and the result is something pretty special.
With lifts still turning and trails slowly drying out, May gives you the rare chance to ski in the morning and hike in the afternoon. Around here, it’s known as Second Season—when the energy is relaxed, the crowds are gone, and the adventure is yours for the making.
Thanks to Mammoth’s high elevation and deep snowpack, the slopes stay open well into spring. That means you can still carve soft snow under sunny skies, often in nothing more than a light jacket. It’s a great time to sneak in a few more laps or even take advantage of discounted spring ski and snowboard lessons—a mellow, low-pressure way to level up before the season ends.
Afternoons Off the Mountain
By the time the lifts start to wind down, the rest of Mammoth is just waking up. The Village is buzzing with live music, patios are open, and lower-elevation trails are starting to dry out—ideal for a post-ski walk, bike ride, or a scenic drive with zero stress. Starting April 21, all lift operations have transitioned to the Main Lodge, with adjusted lift hours from 7:30 AM to 2:00 PM to take advantage of optimal morning snow conditions.
Back at Alpenhof Lodge, you’re right in the middle of it all. Stroll from your room to dinner, soak in the hot tub, or grab a drink at Clocktower Cellar Pub—our cozy, European-style hideaway just downstairs.
Fewer people. More sunshine. Longer days. Mammoth in May is perfect for anyone who loves a little bit of everything. Whether you’re chasing spring turns, warm patios, or just a quieter pace, Second Season delivers—and Alpenhof Lodge is your front-row seat to it all.
Remember, mountain weather can be unpredictable! Even as temperatures rise, winter road conditions can persist. Visit our blog for important safety information.
